BeerAdvocate.com Calls for 'Beer Games' Boycott
June 3, 2002 --
World of Beer receives dozens of email press releases every week, and to be quite honest, most are fairly easily dismissed. But one that arrived this afternoon from fellow beer site BeerAdvocate.com caught our attention, and for good reason.
Jason and Todd Alström, founders and publishers of the site, are organizing a boycott of the upcoming television show, 'The World Beer Games,' scheduled to air in June on the Fox cable network FX in the United States and on City-TV and CKVU in Canada. In explaining their boycott movement, the Alströms brothers describe the show as "irresponsible and downright ignorant."
According to a recent story in the Wall Street Journal, the 'Beer Games,' which is sponsored by Interbrew, beer.com and the Hooters restaurant chain, will be "jam packed with lowbrow humor" and plenty of T&A. The WSJ report describes one scene in the show as follows: "...voluptuous cheerleaders ? decked out in sparkling pastel short outfits ? demonstrate the beer chug and, little surprise here, end up with very wet shirts."
The show, say the Alström brothers, "will make the beer industry, and beer drinkers, look like jackasses."
