American Beer Month Stirs Controversy
July 11, 2002 --
If you've been in a bar in the United States lately, you may have heard about something called American Beer Month. Now in its third year, the ABM is an initiative designed by Boulder, Colorado's Association of Brewers to promote the enjoyment of domestic beer.
This year, RealBeer.com, the host site of World of Beer, decided to help promote the ABM with a contest called the Challenge Cup. The idea, as detailed at
http://www.realbeer.com/challengecup, challenges bars to designate up to ten American Beer Month Challenge beers and try to sell as much of those beers as possible from July 16 - 18.
In order to support the Challenge Cup financially, RealBeer signed on Michelob Amber Bock as a sponsor, and that's where the controversy began. The following two stories detail the objections of Roger Baylor of Rich O's, a first-rate beer bar in New Albany, Indiana, and the response from Stan Hieronymus of RealBeer.com.
