Brewpub Pioneer Elected Mayor of Denver
June 4, 2003 --
In a move that clearly illustrates residents of Denver have their priorities well placed, voters in the Colorado capital have elected as their new mayor John Hickenlooper, a long-time city activist, political neophyte and owner-operator of the landmark Wynkoop Brewing Company as well as other brewpubs.
According to the Denver Post, Hickenlooper gave his victory speech from a podium at City Park, to cries of "Loop, Loop, Loop." He thanked voters and said that "I can't tell you how much I look forward to being the next mayor."
Free food was offered at the election night party, reports the newspaper, as well as "alcohol." No mention was made as to whether the latter included Wynkoop beer.
In a mayoral runoff election held Tuesday, Hickenlooper garnered 64% of the votes cast, for a total of 69,526 ballots. The other candidate, city auditor and veteran politician Don Mares, received 38,126 of the 107,652 total votes counted.
The Wynkoop Brewing Company is Colorado's oldest brewpub, having first opened its doors in 1988. Its role in the revitalization of the former down-at-the-heels warehouse district known as LoDo, for Lower Downtown, has made the enterprise as successful as a civic booster as it is as a brewpub.
