Hoegaarden to Close
November 30, 2005 --
The world’s largest brewing company by volume, InBev, today announced plans to scrap 232 jobs and shut down the fabled brewery in Hoegaarden, Belgium, in order to boost the company’s efficiency.
As reported by Expatica News (www.expatica.com), InBev intends to mothball the northern Belgian brewery where the world’s most famous Belgian wheat beer, Hoegaarden White, is brewed. All production, including the brewing of Verboten Vrucht (“Forbidden Fruit”) and Hoegaarden Grand Cru, will be moved to the company’s southern Belgian operation in Jupille. The storage and bottling facilities at Hoegaarden will remain open.
According to reports, workers at the Hoegaarden plant walked off the job when they heard the news.
