Interbrew Goes Big in Germany
September 19, 2003 --
International mega-brewer, Interbrew, has announced a deal to absorb into its empire the southern German brewing company, Spaten. The purchase, if approved by regulators, would make Interbrew the largest player in the German beer market, with 11% of total sales.
Expected to come into effect in mid-2004, the acquisition of Spaten would see well-known labels such as Spaten, Lowenbrau, Fransiskaner and Dinkelacker join Interbrew's current stable of German brands, which already includes Diebels and Beck's.
The deal, worth 477 million euros, will see Spaten retain its real estate holdings and gain a 13% stake in the Brussels-based Interbrew's German subsidiary, Interbrew Deutschland.
