Book Review - “It’s All About the Beer”

November 15, 2005 -- “It’s All About the Beer”

So says the cover of a book that recently arrived at the offices of World of Beer. Thing is, the pages of said book are blank, save for the inside front cover, which lists spaces for a “Bio of the Beer Drinker.” So what’s it all about, then?

Simply, labels.

“It’s All About the Beer” is a 56-page label book designed for those who wish to keep a visual as well as written account of what they drink, and it serves its purpose well. The paper is fairly heavy and of good quality, the spiral binding makes it easy to handle, and the size is about right for most beer labels.

What separates this from any other book of blank pages, however, is what comes with it: Label Lifters.

Each copy of “It’s All About the Beer” contains an envelope of adhesive label removers, designed to pull paper beer labels off the bottle with ease. And they work, too, although it takes a little practice to be able to get the job done without any creasing or puckering. If you’re a label collector who has grown tired of soaking bottle after bottle, these handy helpers are definitely the way to go.

The downside to the book? The Label Lifters don’t take ballpoint ink very well, so it’s necessary to complete your notes on the beer before you press the label into place, and they don’t furnish enough of the things to fill the book. But those a fairly minor concerns, since extra Label Lifters are sold separately and a little advance preparation is not necessarily a bad thing.

To order “It’s All About the Beer,” its Canadian companion, “Great Beer, Eh?,” or Label Lifters, visit www.vna.on.ca or call 866-977-0777.
