September 12, 2007 --
As earlier reported, Michael Jackson, the extraordinary writer and author of numerous books on beer, died late last month at his home in London, England, following a decade-long battle with Parkinson Disease. No one did more than Michael to further the cause of good beer around the globe, and so to honour his memory and his legacy, the first of what will no doubt be many tributes has been planned.
On September 30, bar and restaurant owners across the United States and Canada are invited to help celebrate the great life and achievements of Michael Jackson by hosting a mass toast to his memory, and along the way raise some much-needed money for the battle against Parkinson Disease. The scheduled time for the toast is 9:00 pm EST, and the organization of the event is entirely up to the participating establishments.
Some will celebrate Michael’s life all night long and donate all or a portion of their revenue to research into Parkinson Disease, while others will simply contribute the proceeds from a specially-designated “Michael’s Memory” keg or pass the hat to solicit donations. The important thing is that as many bars and restaurants and people participate as possible, since everyone who cares about the beer they drink owes Michael more than a small debt of gratitude.
Details on how to participate and the official promotional poster are available at http://www.beerhunter.com. If you’re a beer drinker, encourage your local bar or restaurants to become involved; if you’re a licensee, organize an event of your own for the 30th; and if you’re a brewer or brewery employee, try to get as many of your accounts as possible on board. Let’s all join together for one very important night and pay tribute to the memory of the one and only Beer Hunter, Michael Jackson!
