Will This Be the Week?

May 25, 2002 -- Following months of speculation, this may finally be the week that brings the long-anticipated merger between South African Breweries (SAB) and Miller Brewing of the U.S., according to a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

In a report detailing the US$5 billion deal, the Journal Sentinel predicts that SAB could make the announcement of its acquisition of Miller by as early as mid-week. The combined company would become the world's second largest brewer behind Anheuser-Busch of the U.S. The report also predicts that Philip Morris Cos., Miller's current owner, would retain a 30% stake in the new company.

A Miller spokesman declined comment, but both SAB and Philip Morris have previously confirmed that the two companies are engaged in negotiations.
