Molson's O'Neill Bothered by "Mosquitos, Black Flies"
June 21, 2002 --
Dan O'Neill, CEO of Molson Inc., parent company of Canada's Molson Breweries, has won fans and friends in financial circles with his 'back to the basics' approach to managing the company. But he's unlikely to impress Canada's community of craft brewers and beer aficionados with his latest comments reported in the June 20 edition of The Globe and Mail.
In noting Molson's infinitesimal growth in its home market, O'Neill is quoted as saying that Canada is "the biggest area" in which the brewery needs to improve. To do so, he says, the company will need to win market share currently held by the imports and craft breweries. These latter groups he likens to "mosquitos or black flies buzzing around your head."
To this, World of Beer would like to offer Mr. O'Neill a note of caution. You may see mosquitos as merely an annoyance, but the right one can be deadly.
