Saveur Picks Sierra
January 11, 2002 --
Every year the respected food magazine Saveur picks its 'Saveur 100' representing, in the words of the current issue's editorial, "our favorite people, places, things, and concepts in the wide world of food and drink." For 2002, a seminal American pale ale gets the nod at number 43.
Saveur describes Sierra Nevada Pale Ale as "arguably the most refreshing American beer made today" and praises it as "hoppy in flavor, redolent of grapefruit and pine needles." In conclusion, the magazine lauds the famed pale ale as "the epitome of smooth."
This is neither the first nor last time Saveur has turned its attention to beer. As far back as issue number four (Jan./Feb. 1995), the magazine has asked me to write occasional beer stories for them, beginning with a piece on the cellar-worthiness of Thomas Hardy Ale. And next issue (March 2002), Saveur will feature a lengthy cover story on that most eccentric of Belgian beers, lambic. For me, the creation of this piece was less a typical magazine assignment than it was a labour of love, and the gorgeous and evocative photos provided by New York-based photographer Ben Fink certainly reflect that passion.
The current "Saveur 100" can be found in the Jan./Feb. 2002 issue currently on newsstands. For subscription information, call (in the U.S. and Canada) 877-717-8925 or (elsewhere) 904-447-2592, or visit www.saveur.com.
