Oi! You Call This Whisky?!
September 22, 2003 --
According to the website just-drinks.com, the Scotch Whisky Association has scored a recent victory in South Africa, where counterfeit whisky has been sold under such labels as Original Scotsman, Glen Dowan and Glenshire.
In their report, just-drinks.com says that the legal battle between the SWA and a local company called Purple Rain came to an end when a judge ordered the destruction of 700 cases of what was purported to be Scottish whisky. Labels on the brands claimed that the spirits were "produced in Scotland and bottled in South Africa."
In fact, ruled Judge Binns-Ward, the bottles at issue contained nothing more than South African grape and cane spirit with caramel added. The judge also ruled that Purple Rain should be barred from using imagery like kilted Scotsmen and bagpipes on its labels.
