Credit Where Credit Is Due

December 20, 2002 -- I have long enjoyed the Texas locations of the four-outlet, US-based beer bar chain, the Ginger Man, but for several years have been plagued by bad experiences in the company's New York City outlet. All that changed this past week.

Arriving to meet with an associate at 6:30 on a weekday night, we found the 36th Street bar packed to the rafters with revellers, and so promptly turned tail to find another place where conversation would be a little easier. Immediately after the meeting, though, I returned to the Ginger Man, drawn by the promise of seasonal draughts.

My pint of Anchor Brewing's 'Our Special Ale,' which this year reminds me of nothing so much as gingerbread, was beautifully poured by a bartender still smiling through the torrent of business that had besieged her that night. The half-pint of hop-fuelled Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, which I ordered for my companion, was equally well and cheerfully presented. And nothing I saw at the bar that night made me doubt the Ginger Man's commitment to beer.

Now granted, this might have simply been a good night. But I like to think that it was instead a change in attitude at the Ginger Man, effected since my last visit. That being the case, I'll most certainly return on my next visit to the Big Apple.
