Feature Article

Ten Days in Belgium - April 2000

- Introduction
- PART I (April 2-5)
- PART II (April 6-10)

For most of the first half of April, I will be travelling around the Belgian countryside with a vanload of journalists. It's part of a press trip called "Belgian Beers and Gastronomy -- A Perfect Match," but I call it a prescription for eating too much, drinking too well and generally having a great, if somewhat exhausting, time of it.

Because the start of this trip coincides with the beginning of April, I have decided to try something a little different for World of Beer's Feature Article this month. Instead of having one story posted at the outset of April, the month's Feature will be a diary of sorts, with a new addition arriving on-line every day or two. That way, if you wish, you can join me and my ink-stained companions on our eating and beer-drinking odyssey. But be forewarned, you're still responsible for your own tab.

Cities and town we will be visiting include Brussels, Liege, Antwerp, Ghent and Passendale, and some of the breweries we will be visiting are Chimay, Achel (the newest Trappist brewery), Westmalle (home of the famed original Trippel), Brouwerij Boon and perhaps the gnome-filled home of Brasserie d'Achouffe. It's a busy itinerary, but one loaded with great beers, fine chocolates and cheeses, and no doubt, many good times. Onward!
