I am trying to find a site that sells beer. Can you help me out with that?
Best Regards,
Bill Mark

There are many sites on the web that sell beer. One of the newest is totalbeer.com, or there is the more established beeronthewall.com. You may also wish to investigate a beer of the month club like realbeertour.com.

We're 2 beer lovers from the east coast who will be in Portland on New Years eve...any recommendations for places to check out that night???

Portland is a great place to drink beer. I'd strongly recommend the Horse Brass and the Rose & Raindrop, two outstanding beer bars in the Portland area. Then there is BridgePort, the Portland Brewing Company, Full Sail's Pilsner Room, the Lucky Labrador...the list goes on and on.

Have a great trip!

Kudos on your books. I have enjoyed reading both Taste and Premium. But I have several questions for you. You mention the old adage of dark beer with red meat and light beer with white meat, but if you are eating chicken cacciatore, wouldn't something darker be more appropriate? And if you have a chicken fried steak wouldn't something lighter be more appropriate? In other words, wouldn't the sauce or seasoning have a greater effect on your choice of beverage? I would like to hear your thoughts on this subject.
Thanks,
Mark Miller

Thank you for your email and the kudos. I think that you have misinterpreted my guidelines, though. What I actually suggest is lager with white meat and ale with dark meat, so for your examples, my choices would actually fit the adage: Vienna lager for the chicken cacciatore and perhaps an alt beer or best bitter for chicken fried steak.

Even so, there are massive holes in these guidelines -- how to explain stout and oysters, for example? They are meant to be only starting points, much like their wine-themed cousins, and seasoning, cooking method and sauces will have a big impact on their efficacy, as you rightly point out.

I was just curious as to which was the first beer brewed in history. If you could email me this information, it will be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
Anjali Dixit

The first beer in civilization has been traced to the Nile region some 6,000 years ago, but there is some evidence to indicate that beer's history goes back much, much further than that. As to who brewed it, that is a mystery for the ages.
