Your Comments, Criticisms and Contributions - March 2001

In an article titled "Russian Beer Death" from January 11, 2000, it was reported that "In today's Russia, even the brewing of beer carries with it inherent risks. Or so it seems, following the death of Russian businessman Ilya Vaisman."

I'm curious to learn of developments related to this story in the past year. Do you know of any? Thanks.
-- Chip Van Harris

I have tried to follow-up on this story several times to no avail. To my knowledge, however, Mr. Vaisman's unfortunate death was the only Russian fatality connected to both the brewing industry and the mob.

My colleagues and I are about to set up a microbrewery at an airport in Turkey. We have been trying to get the necessary permissions since the laws of Turkey for alcoholic beverages have started to soften. What we would like to learn from you is which consultants you would recommend for us to get in touch with? (A 25-30 Barrel capacity microbrewery will meet our standards.) And how much (roughly) would it cost to build up a 25 Barrel microbrewery?

We would be grateful if you could help and share your valuable knowledge regarding this subject.
Best Regards,
-- S. Kerem Okman

Thanks for your email. I must admit, though, that I'm not the best source for info about equipment manufacturers. For a better resource, try www.probrewer.com or www.ambrew.com. And best of luck with your brewery!

Mr. Beaumont, I want to invest in the updated version of the Great Canadian Beer Guide. Please advise me of the release date. Will it be this spring?
-- Tom Cowan

The new beer guide should be in stores and available on-line in April or May. Keep an eye on World of Beer for the release announcement.

Do you know how I can find a list of microbrew competitions around the U.S.? Your calendar is great, but I am looking for events for the rest of the year. Thanks for any help you can give.
-- Brian

We are a 111-year-old family business that manufactures ingredients for the frozen dessert market. We have also been making a chocolate extract for many generations that has found many applications in the bakery, beverage, liqueur, ice cream industries. Perhaps for those brewers interested, this product could add a chocolate note to certain beers and ales.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this product. You can also visit our website at www.starkaywhite.com
-- James Katzenstein

I have looked at your page and become quite hungry as a result. Which I think means that you have done your job well. I will pass along your site address to any brewers who ask me about chocolate extracts. Good luck to you.
