My World of Beer Update for St. Patrick's Day, in which I reminded people that there were more Irish stouts than just Guinness, prompted an unusually large amount of email. Here are a few of them.
I spent the day in Waterloo and stomached a couple glasses of Labatt Blue (there were free souvenir cups... I caved!) before I noticed a tap with Murphy's Irish Stout. A bit leery - I am not a stout fan, Guinness does nothing for me and even St. Ambroise is not for me - I persuaded the bartender to give me a sample. I was pleasantly surprised and not only polished off another pint but picked up a for pack of cans at the LCBO for later!
Anyways, thanks for the recommendation!

Your WOB update just arrived in my mailbox. Thought you'd want to know that the Porter House Brewing Company just opened a pub in Covent Garden, London. The address is 21-22 Maiden Lane, just off Bedford Street. The Maple Leaf, which claims to be London's only Canadian bar, is down the street.
The Porter House in London has the same look and feel as the one in Dublin. Unfortunately, it wasn't pouring the oatmeal stout which, one patron in Dublin told me, was brewed from the same recipe as the stout Michael Collins drank.

As always, an excellent WOB edition. I know of no writer who is more in touch with the beer scene than you. Editorially, you are the best. It is so true that many people believe Irish beer starts and ends with Guinness. Those who have expanded their scope, however, are oblivious to the other options available, outside the realm of stouts.

Great tips as always. I was at the Porter House when in Dublin 2 years ago. The Plain Porter was without a doubt the best stout I had on the trip (but not as good as St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout).
Keep up the great work!

And one email from a reader who wished to add to my list of Irish pubs around the globe
I also wrote a magazine story that talked about Irish pubs. Seems they're all the rage right now in Amsterdam.
