Hello Stephen,
How's the restaurant going? We're doing fine here in sunny Ca. I am having a barrel aged beer fest on Nov 11th, which will be our first and should be quite interesting. We're going to do a judging based on the barrel- port/sherry- whiskey/bourbon-and wine. Hope all is well.
Cheers, Vic
Thanks for the note, Vic. (And you'll notice I corrected your spelling on my name - harrumph!) The barrel beer fest sounds interesting (Readers: check out www.the-bistro.com for details), especially in light of WoB's Taste of the Month this month. I'll see if I can make it.
I am currently reading your book "The Great Canadian Beer Guide" second edition and I love it. I have just recently opened my eyes to the various Canadian micro brews over the last two years since my college days, and I can relate to your comments about Canadians sticking to one brand with so many to choose from. I have tried to covert many of my friends to no avail as they just can't let go of the Buds and Canadians. I am from Ontario but living in Halifax for a year and I have made it a goal to visit all the micro breweries and brew pubs in the Atlantic provinces. It is a good drinking scene in Halifax with Rogue's Roost, Granite, Propeller and Garrison. Many great pubs as well. Keep up the inspirational work.
Cheers, Troy Burtch
Thanks for the props, Troy, and don't give up on your friends. Once they realize what they're missing, they'll change.
Greetings, what should I expect as far as taste if I open and drink a can of Schlitz from 1946? Is it safe to drink (or chew)? Will the can be worth more if I leave it sealed? How much longer until the can starts to break down and the ancient brew starts to leak out? My father gave me the sealed can in 1974 and I'm considering consuming this beer on the occasion of my 50th birthday on the 2nd of September. If I do drink this, do I have to worry about becoming ill (or reaching my 51st birthday)? Thanks for your time,
- Bob Rose
First off, a can of half-century old Schlitz probably won't hurt you, but it will also taste like crap, so I suggest not trying. Plus, if you were to sell it to a collector (see breweriana.com) it would be worth more full than empty.
I'd hang on to it for a while longer and pass it on to your kid (or nephew or whatever) so he can sell it on HIS 50th birthday.
