i was just wondering how to clean beer steins. i don't drink out of them, i just collect them and want to keep them in good condition. i have two cabinets full. if you can give me any advice, it would much appreciated
- Thanks, David
If you truly don't ever drink out of them, I'd suggest hot water and a bit of mild soap. If you plan on using them, though, you'll have to take extra measures, like scrubbing the inside with table salt after washing and then rinsing very thoroughly before allowing them to air dry. This will clean out any soapy residue that will kill the foam on the beer.
In either case, keep them away from your dishwasher.
Where can I find Swiss Lowenbrau (Zurich)?
- Don from California
I'm afraid the only place you'll be finding that beer any time soon, Don, is in Switzerland. The Löwenbräu brewery in Munich has been designated the supplier of that beer for North America, so that's the version you can expect to see at your local beer store.
Hi Stephen
Like thousands of other beer fanatics, I'm going to miss Michael Jackson, a lot. He gave beer a language and inspired me to the great and varied taste of Belgian and German beers. His pocket books were indispensable guides. He loved U.S. craft beers and was its biggest supporter and recognized the Americans early on. I don't think the wine world has anyone comparable because he was a pioneer.
Any plans for a new Canadian beer guide? You are Canada's beer guru, no one else is even close. Had the Peché Mortel in Montreal this spring, terrific Imperial Stout, dynamite in a glass. Can you bring in some of Dieu du Ciel's beer to beerbistro? Not one of their beers has ever disappointed. Good article on the balance of beer taste.

Indeed, Michael was a true and great pioneer. He will be sorely missed.
I've no plans at present to revise the Canadian guide, I'm afraid. It's a hell of a lot of work and, quite honestly, I just don't have the time for it right now. Besides, it's my considered opinion that with the rise of the Internet, the published beer guide is at least on serious life support.
Re: Dieu du Ciel, they are at present constructing a production facility. After that's done, I could certainly see them eventually ending up on beerbistro's list. (Although I should add that I have little if any influence on that these days.)
