Taste of the Month

Westmalle Tripel-- Dec 1999

     Over the past month, I have become reacquainted with an old friend of a beer, one that I seldom if ever miss when I visit its country of origin, Belgium. It is a classic brew, to be sure, one of the rare beers that actually defines its style. It is the Westmalle Tripel.

     Likely the best Westmalle Tripel I have ever enjoyed was sipped in front of a roaring fire on a chilly evening in the Belgian spa town of Knokke. But a close runner up would have to be the first time that I relished this great beer from its proper glass in my home in Toronto, courtesy of a local importer, Peter Lopaty of Esprit Agencies, who had seen fit to convince our provincial liquor board that a special release of Trappist ales would be a good and popular move. (Well, duh!)

     To those who have not yet sampled the beauty of the brewing arts that is Westmalle Tripel, my advice is to immediately venture out to find this most magnificently complex, wondrously strong, golden ale. And to those of you who have tasted the beer, I recommend the exact same course of action.
