Fortunately, I have at my disposal in Ontario a delicious Weizen brewed downtown at the Denison's Brewing Company brewpub, fairly fresh Hacker-Pschorr Weisse and Hoegaarden on tap at the Esplanade Bier Markt, where I do some consulting work, and bottled Blanche de Chambly available at my local Beer Store. What really gets my taste buds roaring this time of the year, however, is another brew, the remarkable Schneider Weisse from Germany.
German wheat beers assume many forms: some are spicy and peppery; others offer healthy doses of clove; still others are quite fruity; and a select few call to mind the Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum of my youth. The oldest hefeweizen in existence, however, combines all of these elements in one magnificent, spicy-fruity-peppery flavour bomb. And somewhat amazingly, the Schneider Weisse offers all of this while still maintaining a refreshing character. Truly, a great beer, whether tasted at the Weisses Brauhaus in Munich or on my back deck, and a laudable Taste of the Month.
