Taste of the Month

Broughton Border Gold

It used to be that I thought Brasserie Dupont's excellent Moinette was about the best organic beer was going to get. But then times, techniques and available ingredients changed, and now there is a host of good to excellent organic ales and lagers on the market. One of those is this month's TOTM.

Broughton Border Gold is an organic ale from Broughton Ales of Scotland, brewed with organic malt, spring water and organic Hallertauer hops from New Zealand. And it is one damn fine ale. Rather un-Scottish in that it has a good dose of hop bitterness to it -- perhaps because the brewery is situated near the English border? -- it also has some fruitiness (red apple, dried apricot) in the body, a hint of nuttiness towards the finish and a frankly wonderful balance. There is some spiciness in the lingering aftertaste. A great ale to serve lightly chilled on a summer's eve.
