Taste of the Month

Crannóg Partition Bitter

When Brian MacIssac and Rebecca Kneen moved from the city of Vancouver to the town of Sorrento in the agricultural interior of British Columbia, their goal was to establish a both a successful organic farm and a small organic brewery. Crannóg Ales is the realization of the latter part of that dream.

The pair took possession of their farm in March of 1999, and less than a year later, the first Crannóg brews were born. Much of the work constructing the brewery was done on their own and by hand, and Shirley Warne, formerly of several Canadian breweries, was brought in to help out with the equipment.

The Partition Bitter, which may have its name changed to Beyond the Pale Ale, impressed me the most of the three Crannóg brands. A rich copper colour and lightly fruity, leafy aroma precedes a peachy start, dryish, nutty and slightly tannic body and a very dry, toasty finish. The progress of the flavour from start to finish was admirable and makes the ale highly quaffable. I was certainly left wanting more.
