Taste of the Month

Rauchenfelser Steinbier

November was a big tasting month as, in the countdown to the completion of my new Canadian beer guide (to be published in the spring), I have been busily sampling my way through dozens upon dozens of Canadian brews. And while many of these domestic beers are certainly of high enough quality to merit a TOTM of their own, I have instead reached across the Atlantic for this month's highlight.

Rauchenfelser Steinbier is undoubtedly one of the more unusual beers produced in Germany. During its brewing, super-heated rocks are tossed into the brew kettle to help bring the unfermented beer to a boil, a method that harkens back to the days when brewing vessels were fabricated from wood rather than metal and couldn't possibly be heated over a fire. Once brewing is complete and the beer is moved along to fermentation, the rocks, complete with their coating of caramelized sugars, are reintroduced to the beer.

This highly unusual, hugely labour intensive process results in a delightful lager with a pleasantly smoky, lightly sweet flavour. I think that I will likely be revisiting this particular TOTM in December, perhaps as an aperitif on Christmas day or enjoyed with a mild cigar the night before.
