Taste of the Month

Fuller's 1845 - October 2004

Hot on the heels of my visit to the Fuller's brewery in London (please see last month's feature), the brewery's bottle-conditioned ale, 1845, arrived in my home province of Ontario. And a welcome arrival it is.

Originally brewed in 1995 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the company, this richly hoppy ale is brewed from three different malts and hopped entirely with the classic British hop, Goldings. Deep amber-brown in colour, it offers a caramelly-fruity aroma, with notes of berry equalled by lightly spicy, nutty hop. The body begins with a sweet note of chocolate before developing into a complex blend of bitter, leafy hop, cocoa, rich caramel malt and fruit, topped with a hint of roast. The finish of this 6.3% alcohol by volume beauty is moderately bitter and lasting, with just enough caramel, cocoa and roast hanging on to make things most interesting.

Since fall is now upon us, sipping the 1845 puts me in mind of a roast of beef, served with all the trimmings on a cool Sunday afternoon. Somehow the thought makes the demise of summer just a little more tolerable.
