Taste of the Month

Headstrong Pale Ale - May 2005

A little background on this one: An Ontario importer named Jeff Dafoe once held a stake in the Big Hole Brewing Company of Belgrade, Montana. During that time, he imported into my home province Big Hole's quite tasty pale ale, a beer named Headstrong. When Jeff's piece of the brewery became a thing of history, so did the beer. Or at least, so it did in Ontario.

     Until now.

     Produced under contract by Guelph, Ontario's Wellington Brewery - motto: Try a Welly on! - Headstrong in now back in both draught and bottled form, and I hasten to add that it's better than ever. A hybrid between the British and American styles of pale ale, Headstrong is brewed from 100% floor malted Marris Otter malt and given a generous dose of British noble hops in the boil, before being dry-hopped with handfuls of Cascades. The result is an ale with an obviously British malt profile, some hoppy spiciness and overtones of citrus. In short, it's a deliciously complex, yet eminently quaffable treat.

     Welcome back, Headstrong. We didn't know how much we missed ya.
