Even before I had finished my tasting notes on Lake Placid Brewing's Ubu Ale and Otter Creek Brewing's Stovepipe Porter, I had an inkling that as tasty as these two northeastern ales might be individually - and considerably flavourful they are - together, they would redefine the black and tan.

     Okay, so maybe "redefine" is overstating matters a bit, but this combination is one of the finest black and tans I have tasted for quite some time. The rich, overripe fruit notes of the Ubu Ale, poured in a ratio of about three parts Ubu to two parts Stovepipe, partner marvelously with the gentle, cocoa-ish roast of the Otter Creek ale. The resulting cocktail is a lesson in balance, with neither the sweetness of the 7% alcohol Ubu nor the moderate bitterness of the weaker Stovepipe dominating. And it's fitting, I think, that this discovery came to me in the transitional season of spring, since I imagine that it will serve equally well after a day on the slopes in the winter or relaxing by the campfire in July.
