I got married this summer, in Mexico with family and a handful of friends. So to share the festivities with all those who couldn't make it to the Mayan Riviera, about six weeks after we were wed, my lovely bride and I hosted a reception in Toronto, and the one beer I served on draught was Konig Ludwig Weissbier.
I didn't choose the Konig Ludwig because I think it's the finest weissbier in the land, although it is damn fine, I chose it because it suited the situation. The party was in mid-August, when I was fairly certain it would be at least warm, if not steamy, and wheat beers are simply excellent on hot August nights. Plus, while I indulged in some more adventuresome beers in the bottle, I wanted the tap to be pouring a beer that would be both a flavourful star and accessible to one and all, even those who weren't that adventuresome in their selection of beers. The Konig Ludwig fit that bill.
Hazy and light gold, the weissbier from Kaltenberg offers an aroma equal parts spicy and fruity, with the expected banana notes joined by various citrus elements and a strong background of clove and other spice. In the body, it continues in the same vein, but with a slightly more dominant fruitiness and a mildly creamy character, all finishing just off-dry and thirst quenching. All in all, an enticing summer brew, just as I expected it to be.
